Loan description:
María Cristina Cango Alejandro is 32 and has a five year old son with her partner. Doña María has a small shop selling cosmetics in the town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. She sells creams and perfumes by well known brands such as Avon as well as shampoos and other items such as hair brushes and hair clips. The Avon products are slightly more expensive but popular with customers. Her partner has a workshop from where he makes and sells household furniture, including sofas.
María benefits from being able to simultaneously being able to care for her son who is with her in the shop when not at school. She requested a loan in order to buy new stock for her shop in bulk. One of the difficulties she faces is that customers often buy on credit, paying weekly over a period a time, while she has to pay suppliers in cash when she buys stock. She will also use part of the loan to assist her husband in buying raw materials and supplies for his workshop.
