Miguel Francisco Carmona Troya is a small-scale farmer. He is 62 and divorced with five children, all but the youngest are over the age of 18 now. Don Miguel lives in the district of ‘Santa Teresa’ of the town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. Mainly he grows maize and vegetables. Apart from many years of experience he has also attended several courses offered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock on how to improve production. Most of his children now lives and work in the Ecuadorian capital Quito some 400 miles to the north. And they do from time to time send him financial assistance. He requested a loan in order to buy good quality seeds and pay for manual labour to help him plough and prepare the land for the next sowing. He intends to repay the loan over five months.
