Doeurm Hon is 54 years old and he lives in Battambang province. He farms rice in 14,400 square metres of rice paddy which provides them with an excellent yield in the region of 4 tonnes per hectare. They grow the rice during the rainy season. During the dry season, after harvesting the rice, he grows green beans and watermelons on the same land. He sells the crops directly to merchants who visit him at his farm to negotiate a price. He just keeps about 1.5 tonnes of rice for the family’s own consumption and he sells the surplus. To ensure that he can farm rice and watermelon as he has done in previous years, he has applied for a ten month loan. He will use the loan to buy seed, weedkiller, insecticide, and to pay for ploughing and harvesting costs.
