Romeo Valdez is 52 years old and works with his 42 year old wife Jovita as a farmer in Nueva Ecija province. For the past 28 years, he has been growing onions and other vegetables on a hectare of land and is one of the biggest suppliers of onions in his area. He has two other workers helping him. He has been a member of the microfinance organisation Alalay sa Kaunlaran for the last five years and has already completed several loan cycles. He is now requesting a new loan of $2363 (90,000 Philippine pesos) for the purchase of fertilisers, baskets and high quality vegetable seeds in order to increase and diversify his production.
