Thavy Prom is 50 years old and a mother with four children, who are aged between 18 and 25 years old and all of whom have their own jobs. Thavy and her family live in Morng Russey district, which is in Battambang province. Thavy and her husband have been farming rice since 1993 and now harvest three hectares of rice paddy. Their land yields around two tonnes of rice per hectare and takes about six months to cultivate since they produce wet season rice. When her husband has free time from their own rice farming, he also catches fish from the nearby flooded forest which earns him around $5 a day. To increase their agricultural output they have requested a loan in order to purchase fertiliser, insecticide, weed killer and to pay for ploughing and labour costs. They intend to repay this loan over a period of ten months.
