Chhong

Loan description:

Chhong Chhon is 34 years old and married with four children, who are aged between 4 and 14 years old. His three older children study at the local government school. Chhong and his family live in Ek Phnom district in Battambang province. Chhong grows dry season rice on around three and a half hectares of land. The yield from this crop gives him around two and a half tonnes per hectare and he stocks one tonne of this for his own basic needs. He sells the surplus out to a local trader. Since Chhong grows dry season rice, after a period of three months his crops are ready to harvest. On part of his farming land he can farm twice year. To ensure that he produces more rice to sell this year while his working capital is limited, he has taken out a loan in order to buy good quality seeds, diesel for his hand tractor, insecticide, fertilizer and weed killer. He promises to repay this loan over ten months.
