Salamantou Essikotan is 40 years old and married with three children. All attend the local village school. She earns an income from processing cassava into 'gari', which is a basic food staple throughout West Africa. She sells both retail and wholesale. Salamantou has been doing this for the last twenty years. When they are not at school she is helped by her children, but she also has two employees who help her. She sources the cassava from local farmers and sells at the Abadago market. She is a longstanding borrower of the microfinance organisation ACFB having received and repaid several loans. Her latest loan request is for 500,000 West African francs and it is to help her buy more raw cassava from local villagers.
