Carmen Dolores Vera Suquilanda is married with four children. Doña Carmen is originally from the smaller provincial town of Sozoranga but has lived in the provincial capital Loja for more than 30 years. She is the eldest of five children and left school early in order to earn an income and support the household. She had her first child when she was aged 20. However, she separated from her partner. In order to support her family she has variously worked as a domestic servant, an itinerant trader selling sweets, and also had a stall in the central market selling cooked food. Some years ago with her new partner she even migrated to the town of Zamora around one hour east of Loja and the gateway to the Amazon to work on a farm. However, they were badly treated and decided to return to Loja. About three years ago she started selling grilled meat and chicken, often on a stick, and this has proved to be quite profitable. She is now bringing up her children alone once again and requested a loan in order to buy a new cart and also ingredients in bulk. Buying in bulk means a significant discount. Doña Carmen intends to repay the loan over eight months.
