Batirkassima Ywassa is 35 and lives in the neighborhood of Avedji in Lomé with her husband and son who is six and has been at school for the last two years. Bassima's husband is an electrician. Two years ago Bassima opened a shop selling cosmetics in her own neighbourhod. She has called the business 'Merciful Jesus'. As well as cosmetics she sells some jewellery and other fashion accessories. She buys stock on average once a week from the Grand market in Lome and for this purpose sought a loan of 700,000 West African francs. The loan is for 18 months. She has hopes that she will one day become a wholesale supplier herself as she considers this to be more profitable.
