Chérifatou Adjayi owns a chemists in the Avedji district of the capital Lomé. She is married and has a child aged four. She has had the business for about nine years. Cherifatou buys the medicines from a licensed pharmaceutical company in neighbouring Ghana, transports them back to Togo and re-sells with a small mark-up. The sale of pharmaceuticals is monitored by the Togolese authorities. Indeed, Chérifatou's chemists is regularly inspected by the authorities to ensure that the medicines have not expired or are prohibited. Chérifatou requested a loan of 500,000 West African francs to finance the purchase of new stock. The loan is for ten months.
