Loan description:
Chhoeurn Chiev is 40 years old and married with seven children. His children are aged between one and 18 years old. His four older children are currently studying at the local government school. Chhoeurn and his family live in Bakrotes village, which is in Ek Phnom district, Battambang province. Chhoeurn and his wife have spent their lives as farmers and currently farm four hectares of land which usually gives them a yield of around two and a half tonnes per hectare. They stock some of this rice for their own consumption (around 15 sacks (one sack equals 100 kilograms)) and sell the surplus to a local trader. After they have cultivated their wet season rice they are able to use the same land to grow watermelons and green beans. They sell the watermelons and green beans to a buyer who visits their farm. Aside from farming, Chhoeurn and his wife also buy and sell fish in their village. They have been engaged in this type of business for the past ten years. They generally use their car to deliver the fish to the local market, where they sell it to provide an additional source of income for their household. As their working capital is currently limited, they have sought a loan in order to help cover their farming costs including buying seeds, insecticide, weed killer and diesel for their tractor. A part of this loan will also be used to buy fish from their villagers. They promise to pay this loan back over 14 months.
