Angélica María Tene Pintado is 23 and married with a daughter who is three years old. Angélica married when she was 17 and started working as a day labourer alongside her husband. However, when her daughter was born she had to look for an alternative source of income since she had to stay at home and look after her baby. She therefore started raising and selling chickens and guinea pigs (these are a popular meat throughout the Andes region of South America). She keeps them on land next to her home. Doña Angélica receives a lot of assistance from her husband and her parents, who stay at home whenever she has to attend classes - she is studying a course in Business Administration. She states that her objective is to finish her studies and open a large store selling basic foods. Her husband now works on a prawn farm. She sells the chickens and guinea pigs directly to consumers because she can make a greater profit this way. She sought a loan in order to buy chicks and feed in bulk and also make some modifications to where they are housed. She tends to sell the chickens after around 4-5 months. She does not raise chickens in succession, rather after selling the birds she waits for a while, rests and then buys young chicks once again to raise. She hopes that eventually she might be able to buy a plot of land where she can build her own home.
