Nenita Manguilimutan is 42 years old and single with two children. Her eldest is 24 and a college graduate and he has his own business, while the younger one is 22 years old and is still studying in college. They live in Poblacion, a neighbourhood in the town of Aloguisan in Cebu province. Nenita runs a small shop that sells 'dry' goods. She has had the shop for about 15 years. Amongst other items she sells rubber flip-flops, ready-to-wear clothes and beauty products. She has been able to purchase a small television from her previous earnings which she placed inside her shop. Nenita employs two full time shop assistants. For the last eleven years she has been an active member of the microfinance organisation, Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and has received and repaid four previous loans. Her fifth loan, repayable over one year, is to buy new stock. Nenita also plans to hire another extra assistant if sales continue to increase. Her focus is on ensuring that her younger child also successfully completes college. She also wants to establish another outlet in the future.
