Eng Voeurn is 42 years old and married with five children aged between 7 and 18. The youngest three are still at school, while the eldest has emigrated to work abroad. Eng’s family lives in Changho Svay village, Chengmeanchey commune, Banon district in Battambang province. Eng and her husband, Sokhom Van who is 43, have earned their living from farming for the last ten years or so. They grow maize, harvesting after four to five months. They sell the maize to local merchants. On average, the yield is around five tonnes per hectare. On about one hectare of land she also grows rice which is for her family's own consumption only. She applied for a seven month loan in order to buy maize seeds, insecticide, weedkiller and pay for labour costs.
