Marina Estrella is 46 years old and married with four children, all of whom are studying in college and high school respectively. Marina and her husband run a small internet cafe in the town of Tuburan in the province of Cebu. Marina established the business with help from her husband. The internet cafe is popular with many in her local community who use it to contact relatives and family members living overseas, as well as local students who need access to the internet for their studies. Her children help her to manage the business and this she thinks is a very good way for them to learn about management. She owns ten desktop computers and employs one helper who is charged with the maintenance and repair of the units. This has been the family’s main source of income for the past two years. Marina has been a member of the microfinance organisation, First Consolidated, for four years and she has managed to repay the previous loans that she has received. The loan she has availed this time will be utilised in purchasing additional units of computers to cater for increasing demand. Her ambition is to eventually open more outlets in nearby towns.
